Vortex explores ideas of materiality and colour. A material dialogue is established between the raw steel and the pigmented wood, which retains its ‘woodness’, and a parallel colour dialogue occurs among the pigmented wood set on the background of the raw steel. Both the colour and materiality work to enhance the spatiality of the piece and the connection of the work with the viewer. The work deliberately looks very different when viewed from multiple vantage points, requiring the viewer to look at it from several angles in order to understand it as a totality, thereby adding a temporal element to the viewer’s experience.
