This is the second Phaidon volume on high-tech British architect Nicholas
Grimshaw covering his work from 1965-1988. A previous volume covered the
work from 1988-1993, and a planned third volume will cover 1993-1996. Most
of the projects in this volume are industrial type buildings with moderate
construction budgets. Like early Foster and Rogers buildings, there is
a preponderant emphasis on structure.
The Financial Times Print Works (1988) established Grimshaw=s international
reputation. The design makes the printing process a major part of the architecture.
One views the entire printing process through an intricately detailed 300
foot long glass wall. Other notable buildings covered in this volume include
a structurally expressive grocery store in north London for Sainsbury=s
with a 140 foot free span and a suburban home products store featuring
a large span roof supported from a single mast.
This book will be of particular interest for those architects enthusiastic
about high-tech architecture and those who have a particular interest in
the work of Grimshaw and Partners.
